AC Voltage Conversion and Voltage Converters
Step Up and Step Down? Our Step Down voltage converters are for using equipment from the USA in the UK or Ireland. They have a 3 pin UK power plug and a US socket. Our Step Up voltage converters are for using equipment from the UK or Ireland in the USA. They have a 2 or 3 pin US power plug and a 3 pin UK socket. Power Bright Voltage Converters - While most voltage converters can only be used one way (either they are a Step Up or Step Down voltage converter) - the Power Bright converters we sell can be used either way. Where we supply the Power Bright converters with a UK plug we also supply a free plug adapter. So by changing the selector at the back of the Power Bright voltage converter and fitting the plug adapter you can use the Power Bright Step Down voltage converter as a Step Up converter. This means it can be used to power US equipment in the UK or to power UK equipment in the US. Voltage Conversion Company Voltage Converters - Rather like the Power Bright voltage converters (above), the Voltage Conversion Company products can be used either way. We supply the Voltage Conversion Company converters with a UK plug if you adapt this plug with a UK to US adapter you can use the converter as a step up converter too. So by changing the selector switch at the back of the Voltage Conversion Company voltage converter and fitting the plug adapter you can use the Voltage Conversion Company Step Down voltage converter as a Step Up converter. This means it can be used to power US equipment in the UK or to power UK equipment in the US. If you are choosing a voltage converter for something that will be used continuously - or for long periods of time, you need a converter with a rating substantially higher than the appliance uses, preferably two or three times higher. If you have a power adapter that automatically adjusts to voltage (you sometimes get them on computer equipment) you may not need a voltage converter, just a plug adapter. Check to make sure your adapter can handle 100 Volts to 240 Volts, if it can, have a look at electrical plug adapters. Something else that converts voltage (although in a different way) are Switch Mode Power Supplies and in-car power supplies. These usually change one variety of DC (battery power) into another such as 24 Volts into 12 Volts. Another similar device is a Power Inverter. This takes the input from a 12 Volt or 24 Volt battery (car, truck, boat etc.) and turns it into 240 Volt AC. the point of this is to allow you to power a mains device using a vehicle battery. The Goldsource THG150S is a 150 Watt step down and step up voltage converter. This means that it can either be used in the UK to power an appliance from the US or Canada etc. Or it can be used there to power an appliance form the UK or other European country. The unit has a voltage input selector switch that must be correctly set before it is plugged in. It is fitted with a UK Power Plug, so if you intend to use it abroad you will need a plug adapter such as the PB26 plug adapter.
